Holy Spirit: The Advocate Who Stays
READING:
-John 16:1–11
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
DEVOTIONAL:
When you feel alone, misunderstood, or uncertain, it’s natural to look for comfort or clarity. That’s exactly where Jesus’ disciples found themselves—grieving His words as He told them He was about to leave. But in the midst of sorrow, Jesus offered them something surprising: hope. He tells them it’s actually for their good that He goes, because only then can He send the Paraklētos—the Advocate.
This word paints a powerful image: someone who is called to come alongside, someone who pleads your case, helps, strengthens, and defends. This Advocate wouldn’t just walk with the disciples like Jesus had—He would live within them. His presence would be more constant and intimate than anything they’d experienced before.
When you feel overwhelmed or overlooked, when you're misunderstood or walking through something too heavy to carry on your own, the Holy Spirit isn’t distant or passive. He is near and active—guiding, comforting, convicting, and empowering. He steps into every courtroom of your life to be your Defender. Jesus’ departure was not abandonment—it was the gateway to God within you, always with you, and always for you.
QUESTIONS:
1. Where in my life do I feel most overwhelmed, misjudged, or alone right now?
2. Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to take His place as my Helper and Advocate—or am I still trying to carry this on my own?
3. How can I become more aware of the Spirit’s presence in my daily routine, especially when I’m struggling?
PRAYER:
Holy Spirit, thank You that I am never alone. You are with me in the moments when I feel invisible or misunderstood. You remind me of truth, comfort me in weakness, and speak on my behalf when I can’t find the words. Help me to trust You more deeply and walk with confidence, knowing You are by my side and within me. Amen.
