Throw Off the Old Seeds

Sep 16, 2025

Scripture:

“You were taught… to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.

Ephesians 4:22

Devotional:

You can’t plant new seeds in soil full of weeds. Many of us want the new harvest of God but keep feeding the old man - habits of bitterness, gossip, lust, or distraction. But sowing into the old man is like watering weeds: it only chokes out what God wants to grow. The Spirit invites us to throw off the old self, not patch it up, not polish it, but throw it off completely.

This is a call to radical surrender. The old man doesn’t need managing, it needs crucifying. We can’t harvest the Spirit’s fruit with fleshly seed in our hands. The change comes when we get ruthless about what doesn’t belong - when we stop sowing the old seeds and make room for God’s newness.

Reflection Questions:

1. What “old seeds” do I still scatter into my daily life?

2. Have I made excuses to hold onto habits God is calling me to let go of?

3. What does “throwing off” look like for me right now?

Prayer:

Father, give me courage to release the old seeds. Break every cycle of sin and distraction in me. Fill my hands with new seed from Your Spirit.

Action Step:

Identify one old pattern to stop feeding this week (doom scrolling, gossip, complaining, etc.). Replace it with a Spirit-led practice (prayer, gratitude, Scripture).
