Get Out of The Way

Jul 29, 2025

Scripture:

John 3:30

"He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less."

Devotional:

So much of our struggle with change comes from one thing: we’re still in the driver’s seat. We like control—how things happen, when they happen, and even why they happen. But the Holy Spirit doesn’t need a co-pilot. He needs us to move out of the way so He can lead.

This doesn’t mean we’re passive. It means we’re surrendered. When we let God be God, we learn to trust His timing and direction, even when it feels uncomfortable or unclear. The truth is, His way will often stretch us—but it will also transform us. The Holy Spirit can’t fill hands that are already full of self-will. Real change starts when we’re willing to let go of our plans and invite Him to do what only He can.

Reflective Questions:

1. What’s one situation I’ve been trying to control instead of trusting God with?

2. How would my perspective shift if I allowed the Holy Spirit to lead in this area?

3. Do I believe God’s way is truly better than mine, even when I can’t see the outcome yet?

Prayer:

Father, I admit that I often try to hold on too tightly. I want things to go my way, but I know Your ways are higher. Help me to step aside and allow Your Spirit to lead me fully. Teach me how to loosen my grip and trust You with every detail.

Action Step:

Think of one thing you’re holding onto. Write it on a piece of paper, then physically lay it down somewhere (at your desk, on the floor, at the altar if you’re at church) as a symbol of surrendering it to God.
