Pure Hunger
Scripture
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Psalm 42:1
Devotional
Pastor Steve reminded us that desperation isn’t something we randomly feel one day, it’s something we remember. The psalmist compares his longing for God to a deer desperate for water. This isn’t casual interest. This is survival-level hunger.
Somewhere along the way, comfort crept in. Life became manageable. We learned how to cope, plan, and self-sustain — and without realizing it, our desperation for God softened. We still believe, we still show up, but the ache is quieter. The longing is dulled.
Desperation doesn’t mean chaos or crisis. It means recognizing that without God, we are dry. And choosing to admit that again.
Reflection
1. Where has comfort replaced hunger in my walk with God?
2. When was the last time I truly longed for His presence?
3. What does desperation for God look like in my current season?
Prayer
God, I confess that comfort has sometimes replaced my hunger for You. I don’t want a distant or convenient relationship with You. Awaken my heart again. Let my soul pant for You like water in a dry place.
Action Step
