Emptied Before You Can Be Filled

Scripture:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

We often ask God to fill us with more. More faith, more boldness, more power, more of His presence. But sometimes before God fills us, He first has to empty us.

There are things within us that compete with faith: pride, self-reliance, selfish desires, our own plans, fear, and the need to control the outcome. We can become so full of ourselves that there is little room left for complete dependence on God.

The Hebrew word “aphal” carries the idea of being swollen or lifted up. It gives us a picture of a heart that has become inflated with itself. Faith moves in the opposite direction. Faith humbles itself before God and says, “I don’t have to understand everything. I trust You.”

And the beautiful part is that God doesn’t leave us to empty ourselves alone. As we surrender to Him, He helps us identify and release what is taking up space that belongs to Him. Before asking God to increase your faith today, ask Him what needs to be emptied.

What am I holding onto that is keeping me from fully trusting God?

Prayer:

Father, search my heart and show me anything that needs to be surrendered to You. Empty me of pride, selfish ambition, fear, and my need for control. I don’t want to be full of myself—I want to be full of faith in You. Help me surrender what I cannot release on my own and teach me to depend completely on You. Amen.
