Seeing God For Who He Truly Is

Scripture: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord doesn’t begin with trying harder or following more rules—it begins with seeing God as He truly is. Solomon connects wisdom with knowing God because our view of Him shapes everything else. If our view of God is small, our worship will be small. If our view of God is casual, our obedience will become casual. But when we behold His holiness, majesty, and glory, our hearts naturally respond with reverence.

Throughout Scripture, no one had to be taught how to fear God after encountering Him. Moses removed his sandals at the burning bush. Isaiah cried, “Woe is me!” Peter fell before Jesus saying, “Depart from me, Lord.” God’s glory produced reverence. They weren’t overwhelmed by God’s anger, they were overwhelmed by His holiness.

The more we behold God, the more we become like Him. Our greatest need isn’t simply more information about God; it’s a greater revelation of who He is. As we fix our eyes on His beauty and holiness, the Holy Spirit transforms our hearts from the inside out.

1. What picture of God do you tend to carry: distant, familiar, or truly holy?

2. How would your daily life change if God’s greatness became your biggest reality?

Prayer:

Father, open my eyes to see You as You truly are. Remove every small or distorted view I have of You. Let Your holiness, glory, and goodness capture my heart so that reverence becomes my natural response. Teach me to live in awe of who You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Action Step:

Spend five minutes quietly reading Isaiah 6:1-8. Before asking God for anything, simply worship Him for who He is.
