The Heart Behind Jubilee

Leviticus 25:23

“The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me.”

Devotional

When we hear “Year of Jubilee,” our minds often jump to freedom, restoration, canceled debts, and blessing. While all of those things are true, God begins the chapter with something much deeper.

“The land is Mine.”

Everything Israel possessed was ultimately God’s. Their homes, fields, harvests, wealth—even the Promised Land itself—was only entrusted to them.

Jubilee wasn’t simply an economic reset. It was a spiritual reminder.

The wealthy were reminded that their abundance wasn’t self-made. The poor were reminded that their identity wasn’t found in what they lacked. Both groups were called back to the same place: complete dependence on God.

The danger for the wealthy is believing they don’t need Him. The danger for the poor is believing He has forgotten them. Jubilee dismantles both lies.

God isn’t after your possessions.

He’s after your heart.

Every blessing He gives is meant to point us back to the One who gave it.

Where have you begun treating God’s blessings as though they belong to you instead of being entrusted to you?

Prayer

Father, thank You for every good thing You’ve placed in my life. Help me remember that everything I have belongs to You. Keep my heart from becoming attached to possessions more than Your presence. Teach me to live as a faithful steward who trusts You above everything else.
