Fresh Paint Isn't Enough

Sep 1, 2025

Scripture:

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Devotional:

Renovation is refreshing. It feels good to start new habits, to pray more consistently, to dive back into Scripture, to worship with intention. These are like fresh coats of paint over the walls of our lives. They make us feel alive and realigned.

But as Zech said, fresh paint can only go so far. You can paint over cracks, but if the foundation is broken, the cracks will bleed through. Spiritually, the same thing happens when we depend only on “renovations” - the surface looks better, but the deeper issues remain untouched.

God wants to bring you further than refreshment. He wants to restore the foundation of your heart. Renovation is your daily response; restoration is His transforming work.

Reflection Questions:

1. Where have I relied on surface fixes rather than surrendering the deeper issues?

2. What habits keep me spiritually fresh, and which ones am I using to hide cracks?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the gift of renewal through prayer, Scripture, and worship. But I don’t want to settle for surface change. Show me where my foundation needs You, and restore what I cannot repair on my own.

Action Step:

Write out your daily spiritual practices/disciplines. Ask God to show you if you’re using them as refreshment only, or if you’re letting Him go deeper. Circle one area to surrender to Him this week.
