Love That Deepens Reverence

Scripture: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” 1 John 4:18

Some people assume that because God’s love casts out fear, Christians no longer fear God. But Scripture paints a different picture. Jesus didn’t remove our reverence for God—He removed our condemnation before God.

A slave fears punishment. A son or daughter fears grieving the heart of a loving Father.

The fear of the Lord isn’t built on terror; it’s built on relationship. The more we understand God’s love through Christ, the more we desire to honor Him. Love doesn’t lessen reverence, it deepens it.

This changes how we approach obedience. Instead of asking, “What’s the minimum I have to do?” we begin asking, “What would bring joy to the Father’s heart?” Worship stops feeling like obligation and becomes our joyful response to His goodness.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that through Jesus I can come near without fear of condemnation. Teach me to honor You not because I have to, but because I love You. Let my obedience become an act of worship. Amen.
