It’s More Than Going Through The Motions

Scriptures: Haggai 1:5–7, Revelation 2:2–5

In Revelation, Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus. He recognizes their hard work, perseverance, and faithfulness in many areas. Yet He confronts them because they had forsaken their first love. They were doing the work, but something was missing in their hearts.

It's possible to attend church, serve in ministry, worship on Sundays, and remain involved in spiritual activities while slowly becoming distant from Jesus personally.

We can become so familiar with the routine of serving God that we forget the joy of simply being with Him. But God desires more than our participation. He desires our hearts. Don't become so occupied with serving Jesus that you forget the joy of knowing Jesus.

Our relationship with God was never meant to be reduced to a checklist of spiritual responsibilities. He invites us into genuine fellowship, where our worship and obedience flow from love rather than obligation.

Reflection Questions:

1. Am I pursuing Jesus out of genuine love, or have I become comfortable with a spiritual routine?

2. When was the last time I intentionally spent time with God without an agenda?

Prayer:

Jesus, I don't want to simply go through the motions. Search my heart and reveal where I've allowed routine to replace relationship. Restore my first love and remind me of the joy of knowing You. May everything I do for You flow from a heart that truly loves You. Amen.
