Lukewarm Isn't Safe

Jul 21, 2025

Scripture:

Revelation 3:15–16

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Devotional:

Jesus addresses the church of Laodicea not for being outright rebellious, but for being comfortably neutral. The word “hot” in the Greek implies passion, fervor, and spiritual vitality. “Cold” doesn’t mean evil—it means sluggish or indifferent. And lukewarm? It’s spiritual apathy masked in occasional engagement. Jesus doesn't ask for perfection—He asks for surrender.

Lukewarmness is often disguised as convenience, but it leads to disconnection from purpose. If God seems distant, it might not be distance—it might be divided loyalty. Halfway faith doesn't move mountains. He desires a heart fully surrendered, fully awake, and fully “in.”

Questions:

1. Where in my life have I grown lukewarm or spiritually passive?

2. What makes me resist going all in?

3. Do I equate busyness with spiritual fervor—or am I actually close to the Lord?

Prayer:

Jesus, You see every part of my heart—even the parts I’ve let grow numb. I don’t want to be lukewarm anymore. Stir me up again. Let me burn with real passion for You, not surface-level devotion. Break off anything in me that has settled into comfort instead of calling. Awaken me to pursue You with everything I have. I surrender the illusion of “safe” Christianity. Make me alive in You again.

Action Step:

Take five full minutes today to sit before God in silence. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any area you’ve gone lukewarm. Then write it down—and make a bold move to change it. Confess it. Tell someone. Set a new rhythm. Burn the bridge.
