The Power of God’s Love in a Self-Centered World

1 John 4:7–21

DEVOTIONAL:

One of the greatest deceptions of our time is the world's redefinition of love. We're told love is about self-fulfillment, instant gratification, and only giving when it's deserved. Culture says, “Love yourself first,” but God says, “Love one another, for love comes from Me.”

This passage in 1 John dismantles the world’s lies and brings us back to truth: real love is not about what we get—it’s about what we give. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son…” (v.10). God’s love is not reactive—it’s sacrificial, intentional, and deeply rooted in who He is.

Deception convinces us to guard our hearts by withholding love. But the truth of the Gospel calls us to give love freely because we have received it freely. The enemy would love for us to live with bitterness, offense, and self-preservation. But perfect love drives out fear (v.18)—including the fear of being hurt, misunderstood, or rejected.

In a world full of filters and false promises, you have the opportunity to live differently. Let the truth of God’s love ground you today. Be bold in kindness. Be courageous in forgiveness. Be generous in grace. This is how we expose deception—with the unstoppable, undeniable love of God flowing through us.

ASK YOURSELF TODAY:

1. Are there any lies I’m believing about love—either what it is, or who deserves it?

2. Is there someone in my life I’ve found hard to love? What would it look like to show them Christlike love this week?

3. What’s one way I can replace a self-centered reaction with a Christ-centered response today?

PRAYER:

Jesus, open my eyes to where I’ve believed lies about love. Thank You for loving me when I didn’t deserve it. Teach me to love others with that same mercy and truth. Let me live as a witness to Your love in a world that’s confused and deceived. Use me to bring light and clarity where there’s darkness. Amen.
